Background Remover

Cut the subject out of a photo and drop the background — keep it transparent for designs and product shots, or put a clean solid colour behind it instead. The AI runs entirely on your device: your photo is never uploaded, ever.

How it works — an AI model that comes to your photo

Most background removers work the other way round: you upload your photo to a stranger's server, their computers cut it out, and you download the result — and trust them about what happens to the copy in between. This tool flips that around. When you click “Remove background”, your browser downloads an AI model once — about 111 MB in total, the model itself (BRIA's RMBG-1.4) from Hugging Face's public library, plus the AI runtime that runs it from the jsDelivr CDN — and from then on the model lives in your browser and does the work on your own device. Your photo itself is never sent anywhere: the only traffic is the one-time model download, and you can prove the rest to yourself — once the model has loaded, switch your device to airplane mode and the remover still works.

Downloaded once, then cached

One hundred and eleven megabytes is a real download, so the page tells you about it before anything moves, and it happens exactly once: your browser caches the model, so coming back tomorrow — or cutting out a second photo straight after the first — skips the download entirely. (Clearing your browser's site data clears the cache too, and the model would download again on your next visit.) Nothing about the model or the runtime is served from this website; both load from the same public CDNs anyone can use, only when you ask for them.

Transparent, or a new colour?

With the background gone you have two honest options. Keep it transparent and the download is a PNG with a true alpha channel — the format product photos, logos, stickers and design work need, ready to drop onto any background of your own. Or pick one of the solid colours (or any custom colour) and the download becomes a JPG with that colour baked in — handy for a clean marketplace listing, a profile picture, or matching a page's design. Try a few colours freely: switching repaints instantly from the finished cutout and never re-runs the AI. If the subject then needs a specific shape, take the transparent PNG to the Aspect Ratio Cropper, and if the file is heavy, finish with the Image Compressor.

An honest note on quality

Clean, well-lit subjects with a clear edge against their background — a product on a table, a person against a wall, a pet in good light — come out beautifully, and for most everyday uses the result is ready as-is. The honest limit of free, on-device AI is fine detail: wispy hair, fur, lace, glass and busy backgrounds that blend into the subject can leave soft or slightly ragged edges, where the big paid server tools — with far larger models and a human-priced subscription behind them — still do a little better. If an edge matters, zoom in and check it before you rely on the cutout, and start from the sharpest, best-lit original you have.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is read by your own browser and processed on your own device; it is never transmitted. The only download is the AI model itself, fetched once from public CDNs (Hugging Face and jsDelivr) when you click the button — the same kind of download as loading any web page, and it contains no information about you or your photo.

Why is there a ~111 MB download the first time?

That is the price of keeping your photo private. Server tools hide their model on their machines — which is exactly why your photo has to go to them. Here the model (about 88 MB) and the runtime that executes it (about 23 MB) come to you instead, once, and your browser caches them for next time. On a slow connection the first cutout takes a little patience; every one after that starts immediately.

PNG or JPG — which should I download?

PNG if you chose the transparent background: JPEG simply has no way to store transparency, so a transparent download is always a PNG. JPG if you picked a solid colour — the colour is part of the picture, the file is smaller, and it opens everywhere. You can download both from the same cutout; just switch the swatch and download again.

What photos work best?

One clear subject, in focus, in decent light, standing out from what is behind it. Very large photos are fine but may take longer on older phones and laptops, since all the work happens on your device. If a result disappoints, a sharper original with better separation between subject and background is the single biggest fix.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser — the same model runs there, with the same one-time download (worth doing on Wi-Fi the first time). Background removal is heavy work for a small chip, so a recent phone will feel noticeably quicker than an old one.
