The size is the easy part — the composition is the rule
Getting a photo to 2×2 inches or 35×45 mm is simple arithmetic, and any cropper can do it. What actually gets passport and visa photos rejected is composition: how much of the frame your head fills, where the crown of your head sits, and what is behind you. Those rules differ by authority. A US photo asks for the head to fill about 50–69% of the frame height, a UK photo 64–76%, an EU or Schengen visa photo 71–80%, and Canada — on its taller 50×70 mm frame — only 44–51%. The guide in the frame above encodes those commonly published ranges for the standard you pick: the dashed oval is sized to the middle of the allowed range, so if the crown of your head sits on the top line and your chin lands near the lower one, you are comfortably inside the rules rather than on their edge.
Composition is only part of it. Every authority also expects a plain, light background with no patterns, objects or other people in it, even light on your face with no harsh shadows across it or behind you, eyes open and looking at the camera, and a neutral expression. Take the photo in good, soft daylight against the plainest wall you have, with the camera at eye level and about a metre and a half away — a well-taken original needs no fixing, and no tool can add light or sharpness that was never captured.
About the white background option
If your best photo has a busy or dark background, the optional step in the tool can replace it with plain white. It uses exactly the same on-device AI model as our Background Remover — BRIA's RMBG-1.4, running entirely in your browser — so it carries the same honest cost: a one-time download of about 111 MB (the model from Hugging Face's public library, plus the AI runtime from the jsDelivr CDN), after which your browser caches the model and the step starts instantly. If you have already used the Background Remover on this device, the cache is shared and there is no big download at all. Your photo itself is never uploaded, whichever route you take.
Two honest cautions. First, many authorities require a plain light background — white for some, light grey or cream acceptable for others — so check which yours asks for before choosing the AI step. Second, a naturally plain background, photographed well, still beats any AI: the model is good on clean edges, but fine hair, glasses rims and wispy details can come out soft. If the wall behind you is already plain and light, you do not need this step at all.
Print it yourself
The single-photo download is exported at 600 DPI — far more resolution than any lab or home printer can use — so it prints at exactly the official size. The sheet download does the maths for the paper most people already have: your photo is laid out in copies at 300 DPI on one 4×6 in sheet (1200×1800 px), each copy outlined with a thin grey guide so you can cut it out with scissors or a trimmer along a straight edge. Print it on photo paper, set the printer to 4×6 in and “actual size” (turn off any “fit to page” scaling, which would quietly change the photo's dimensions), and let it dry before cutting. Working out a different paper size? The Print Size Calculator shows how large a photo can print cleanly, and the Aspect Ratio Cropper handles any other frame shape you need.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The maker runs entirely in your browser — framing, cropping and both downloads happen on your own device, and your photo is never transmitted. The only possible download is the AI model for the optional white-background step, fetched once from public CDNs when you click that button; it contains no information about you or your photo. You can verify the rest yourself: load this page, switch to airplane mode, and the framing and downloads still work.
Will my photo definitely be accepted?
No tool can promise that. This maker matches the published size and composition rules for each standard, but final acceptance is always the issuing authority's decision — check their current photo rules before you submit, especially for anything unusual like glasses or head coverings. Rules also change from time to time, and some applications have extra requirements (a recent photo, a specific background shade, no smiling) that no framing tool can check for you.
Why does the white background step download something?
That download is the price of keeping your photo private. Server-based tools hide their AI model on their machines — which is exactly why your photo has to go to them. Here the model (about 88 MB) and the runtime that executes it (about 23 MB) come to you instead: about 111 MB once, then cached by your browser, so the step is instant next time — and if you have used our Background Remover on this device, it is already cached. Clearing your browser's site data clears the cache too, and the model would download again on your next visit.
What if my country is not listed?
Pick the closest listed size — a great many countries share the same few frames, most often 35×45 mm or 2×2 in — then check your authority's exact millimetres and head-size range before you rely on it. If the physical size matches but the head range differs slightly, favour your authority's numbers and use the guide as a starting point, leaving a little room around the head rather than filling the frame to its edge.
